Why Is Robinhood Adding Crypto Trading In The UK?

Robinhood has begun rolling out cryptocurrency trading to eligible UK customers, giving users access to more than 50 digital assets directly through its main investing app as the company expands its product range beyond traditional equities.

The service is being provided through Bitstamp UK Ltd, the crypto exchange business Robinhood acquired for $200 million last year. Bitstamp UK is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority as a crypto asset service provider.

Customers can trade assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and HYPE alongside Robinhood’s existing UK products, which include stocks and shares ISAs, equities, options and futures. Bringing those products into one application supports Robinhood’s effort to become a broader investment platform rather than a business dependent mainly on stock and crypto transaction revenue.

The crypto service launches with zero trading fees, account maintenance fees and custody fees. UK users will still pay a 0.1% foreign exchange fee, rising to 0.3% for certain weekend currency conversions.

Robinhood also warned that crypto assets held through Bitstamp UK are not protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme or the Financial Ombudsman Service, leaving customers without some of the protections that apply to regulated financial products.

“A new wave of UK investors sees digital assets as an important part of a diversified portfolio,” said Jordan Sinclair, president of Robinhood UK Ltd and general manager of Bitstamp UK Ltd. “With today’s launch, we’re taking another major step toward becoming the all-in-one investment platform for the UK.”

What Does Bitstamp Add To Robinhood’s UK Strategy?

The Bitstamp acquisition gives Robinhood an established crypto infrastructure and a regulated UK entity through which it can offer digital asset trading. That reduces the need to build an exchange operation from scratch and gives Robinhood access to technology, liquidity relationships and compliance systems already used by Bitstamp customers.

The integration also shows why Robinhood viewed Bitstamp as more than a standalone acquisition. By placing Bitstamp-powered trading inside its main app, Robinhood can offer crypto to customers who may already use the platform for equities, options or tax-efficient investment accounts.

That cross-selling opportunity could become more valuable than attracting crypto-only users. A customer holding several asset classes within one account may trade more frequently and become harder for competing investment platforms to win away.

Investor Takeaway

Robinhood’s UK crypto rollout is less about adding another trading product than increasing the number of financial activities customers can keep inside one app. Bitstamp gives the company a regulated route into crypto while Robinhood supplies the distribution.

How Is Robinhood Using AI And Blockchain Around Crypto?

The UK launch also introduces Cortex Digests for Crypto, a generative AI-powered feature that analyzes news, market data, technical indicators and Robinhood’s own data to explain factors affecting individual cryptocurrency prices.

The feature is designed to give traders market context without requiring them to leave the Robinhood application. If widely used, tools such as Cortex could increase engagement by combining execution, portfolio management and market analysis in the same interface.

Robinhood is also expanding its blockchain infrastructure through Robinhood Chain, a permissionless Layer 2 network based on Arbitrum. The company said developers can build on the network globally, including from the UK.

Since launching on July 1, Robinhood Chain has generated more than $18 billion in decentralized exchange trading volume and exceeded $478 million in total value locked. CEO Vlad Tenev also said the network became the fastest Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible blockchain to reach 100 million transactions.

The network gives Robinhood another route into digital assets beyond brokerage fees. If activity continues growing, the company could build services around tokenized assets, decentralized trading and blockchain-based settlement while keeping its consumer app as the main entry point.

Why Does Crypto Expansion Matter As Trading Revenue Falls?

The UK rollout comes as Robinhood’s crypto transaction revenue has weakened from last year’s levels. The company reported $100 million in second-quarter crypto transaction revenue on July 29, down 38% from the same period in 2025.

Prediction markets generated $156 million during the quarter, again ahead of the $100 million from crypto transactions; in Q1 2026 event contracts brought in $147 million against crypto’s $134 million.

The figures show why Robinhood is adding businesses that can reduce its dependence on any single trading category. Crypto remains useful for attracting active investors, but falling transaction revenue shows that volumes can change quickly with market conditions.

Expanding in the UK through Bitstamp, adding AI market tools and developing Robinhood Chain gives the company several ways to earn from digital assets beyond simple buy-and-sell activity. The next test will be whether UK customers adopt crypto inside the app in meaningful numbers and whether those users also increase activity across Robinhood’s other investment products.
