The CNN cable news network has named former New York Times CEO Mark Thompson as its chief executive, replacing Jeff Zucker, who had been in the role since 2013.

Thompson, who is currently the CEO of the Financial Times’ parent company, will take the reins of the cable news network on January 1, 2021. Zucker will stay on in an advisory role for the remainder of the year.

Thompson joins CNN from the Financial Times, where he has held the position of CEO since 2010. At the Financial Times, Thompson successfully steered the company’s transition into a digital-first media company and led the expansion of its product offerings. Prior to his time at the Financial Times, Thompson was the Director-General of the BBC from 2004 to 2012 and held various positions there from 1995-2004.

At CNN, Thompson will look to further develop the leading cable news network into a multi-platform brand. Thompson will be tasked with building CNN’s digital presence, finding new ways to monetize its content, and driving growth in international markets.

Thompson brings a wealth of experience and know-how to CNN as he takes the helm in 2021. He is expected to be instrumental in guiding the company in its pursuit of further growth and building out its digital offerings.
