GM union workers ratify UAW deal following contentious vote
Union workers for General Motors have ratified a new contract with the United Auto Workers (UAW) following a contentious vote. According to the union, just 51% of members voted to ratify the deal, which includes a $11,000 signing bonus, 3% raises across the board, and $7,000 in lump sum payments. The contract also includes a pathway to permanent employment for temporary employees and an end to the two-tiered wage system, among other items. The vote comes after weeks of negotiations between GM and the UAW after the union rejected a previous deal in October. Despite the narrow margin of victory, UAW president Gerald Kariem declared the result to be a “victory for UAW members and their families.”
