House Democrat Anna Eshoo announces she will not seek reelection
California Representative Anna Eshoo announced on Friday that she will not run for re-election in 2022.
The 81-year-old Democrat has represented Silicon Valley in the US House of Representatives since 1993. In a statement released Friday, Eschoo said, “It is with deep appreciation and profound gratitude that I announce I will not seek re-election to the House of Representatives in 2022.
“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve the people of the 18th Congressional District,” Eshoo added. She cited health concerns as a major factor in her decision not to run for a 15th two-year term, saying that “the rigors of service requires an ever-renewing energy that I considered carefully.”
Eshoo also noted her belief in the importance of term limits, saying that it is “essential to open doors to new leaders who can lift their voices and serve in Congress.” Eshoo joins a number of other longtime House Democrats who have announced their retirement this election cycle, including Representatives Henry Johnson, Jr., who is stepping down from his seat in Georgia; and Ed Perlmutter, who is retiring from Colorado’s 7th Congressional District.
