Calls for UN leader’s resignation intensify after ‘shameful’ comments about Hamas attacks on Israel
The U.N Secretary General Antonio Guterres should resign after his comments about the recent Hamas rocket attacks on Israel were labelled “shameful” and hypocritical by world leaders. Guterres had urged restraint from both sides but neglected to condemn the rocket attacks or call for accountability for Palestinian terror groups, making him complicit in enabling further violence.
The comments sparked international criticism from leaders around the globe. U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, said Guterres’ words were “absolutely and utterly shameful” and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Guterres of crossing a “red line” by not speaking out against the Hamas attacks.
In light of the strong international condemnation, it is clear that Guterres’ comments were simply not enough. The world needs more decisive leadership on this issue and an apology for the lack of action is not satisfactory. Guterres should resign and be replaced by someone with the ability to stand up for global peace and security.
