Former Colombian President Ivan Duque calls for US to take more proactive role in Latin America
Former Colombian President Ivan Duque has called on the United States to take a more proactive and nuanced role in Latin America to help promote regional stability and economic prosperity. The former head of state, who served for two years between 2018 and 2019, stated that the US should use its influence to support constructive engagement with the region and proactive approaches to addressing the region’s challenges, such as border security, migration, and drug trafficking. He also urged greater support for democracy and human rights in the region. As President Duque stated, the US must strive to “build a relationship with our region based on cooperation and respect for sovereignty, not only to defend our own interests, but also to foster a more prosperous and safe future.”
