Landslide causes motorway to collapse in Sweden

In July 2018, a landslide near the city of Karlstad in Sweden caused a section of the E18 motorway to collapse into the Klara River, resulting in the closure of the important motorway route for several weeks. The landslide was triggered by an unusually high water table due to the excessive rainfall that had hit Sweden throughout July 2018. The closing of the road caused significant delays and disruption to tourists and locals travelling on the E18 between Karlstad and Varmland. The Swedish Transport Administration estimated that it would take three months to repair the damage, but the actual repairs only took several weeks due to extensive effort from both government authorities and contractors.
