At least 13 killed as fierce winds hit Argentina
At least 13 people have been killed and several more injured after a strong wind storm hit Argentina, the National Weather Agency said.
The storm hit late Sunday evening with winds of up to 100 km/h (62 miles/h) in the western province of La Rioja.
The provincial government said four people were killed in a car accident caused by the winds and nine others were killed by flying objects or debris.
Four people remained hospitalized in intensive care. Nearly 1000 homes were damaged and some 6000 people were affected, officials said.
The storm also affected parts of neighboring provinces of San Juan and Tucuman.
“This was an unprecedented wave of windshit the region,” said the governor of La Rioja, Ricardo Quintela.
The death toll is expected to rise as reports of missing people and damage continue to come in.
