Meet Tom Emmer, the GOP majority whip running for House speaker with McCarthy’s endorsement
Tom Emmer is the Republican majority whip in the United States House of Representatives, and he is a candidate for the position of House Speaker. He currently represents Minnesota’s 6th congressional district. Emmer was first elected to the seat in 2014 and has served since then. He has the endorsement of current House Minority Leader and fellow Republican Kevin McCarthy for this new position.
Previously, Emmer served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2005 to 2011. During his tenure in the House of Representatives he served as minority leader and as chairman of the Tax Committee. He was also vice chairman of the Government Operations Reform, Technology and Elections Committee.
Throughout his political career, Emmer has been an advocate for smaller government, states rights, and conservative fiscal policies. He has long opposed the Affordable Care Act, advocating instead for an individual mandate that would replace it. He has also been an outspoken critic of gun control laws, arguing that they infringe on Americans’ constitutional rights.
Emmer’s extensive political experience and his demonstrated commitment to conservative values make him a strong candidate for House Speaker. If successful, he would become the first person from Minnesota to hold that position since Carleton College’s Martin Olav Sabo, who served from 1993 to 2001.
