At least 10 Cuban migrants die after truck overturns in Mexico, officials say

At least 10 Cuban migrants died in Mexico after a truck full of them overturned, Mexican officials said on Friday. The truck was carrying around 40 passengers when it crashed in the Baja California region, located near the U.S.-Mexico border. Thirty other migrants were injured in the crash.

The truck was traveling from Tijuana to Mexicali when it flipped over as it was attempting to make a sharp turn. Local firefighters rushed to the scene, with paramedics and police officers, but were unable to save all of those on board.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated, but officials believe the overloaded truck and the high speeds at which the driver was traveling were factors. It is unclear precisely why the Cuban migrants were onboard the truck, however people from Cuba often attempt such journeys in order to reach the United States.

Mexico has provided Humanitarian Visas to many Cuban migrants in recent months, allowing them to legally remain in the country while they attempt to pursue legal methods of entry to the U.S. The Mexican government has warned migrants to avoid using illegal means to travel, but these pleas have largely gone unheeded.
