Trudeau blames ‘right-wing, American MAGA’ after Canadian Conservative Party votes against Ukraine bill
Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, blamed “right-wing, American-led MAGA efforts” after the federal Conservative Party voted against his government’s bill to provide support to Ukraine.
Trudeau said on Tuesday that he was disappointed with the Conservative Party’s decision to oppose the bill, but urged Canadians to “proudly stand with Ukraine” even in the face of U.S. President Donald Trump’s pro-Russian policies.
“It seems that we’re seeing right-wing, in some cases, American-led, MAGA efforts to actively intervene in Canadian politics, to call on Members of Parliament to vote against measures that would support Ukraine at a time when it is subject to incredible aims of destabilization and military intervention by Russia,” Trudeau said during a news conference.
He added that Canada will continue to stand with Ukrainians “despite the disruption of some MAGA-driven groups who are actively trying to interfere with the support Canada is showing to a country who’s been invaded and occupied by a foreign nation.”
The controversial bill, which would have allocated funding for Canadian businesses and infrastructure in Ukraine, was ultimately defeated by a vote of 144 to 141.
