What we know about what Israel has found at Al-Shifa
Israel has reportedly found limited evidence of a chemical weapons program at Sudan’s Al-Shifa pharmaceutical factory, which it destroyed in 1998. However, the evidence it has obtained is inconclusive, and the accuracy of the available information is contested. According to a U.S. government report published the year after the attack, some of the facility’s scientific equipment, including mixers and flasks, could have been used to manufacture chemical weapons. In addition, soil samples taken from the site tested positive for the precursor ingredients of a nerve gas–like compound. However, the same report concluded that it “could not conclusively determine the purpose of the Al-Shifa facility.”
