Mexico church roof collapses, killing at least nine people
At least nine people were killed and dozens more injured after a church roof collapsed in the Mexican state of Tabasco on Sunday.
The collapse happened at the Templo de Santa Cruz, a Pentecostal church in the town of Villanueva. According to reports, the roof of the building gave way during a religious event, trapping dozens underneath the rubble.
Tabasco’s interior minister said emergency crew had been working throughout the night to remove the debris and locate any possible survivors.
At least 18 people have been pulled from the wreckage, although it has been reported that some were dead when they were removed from the wreckage.
The cause of the collapse is still being investigated, but authorities have said that heavy rain and strong winds in the area just prior to the collapse could have been to blame.
The tragedy has left the local community devastated and the town mayor has declared three days of mourning.
