Mahsa Amini’s father detained by Iranian authorities on anniversary of daughter’s death
The father of Iranian student and activist Mahsa Amiri has been detained by Iranian authorities on the six-year anniversary of his daughter’s death, according to reports. Amiri’s father, Habib Amini, was reportedly taken into custody on Sunday morning.
Amini’s death in 2015 sparked a movement of social protest in Iran. She had reportedly been detained on a variety of charges related to her activism. The student was taking part in the nationwide demonstrations of 2009–2010, when she was arrested and held for 32 days. She was released in August 2010, but in October 2015, five years after her release, she was found dead under suspicious circumstances.
The circumstances surrounding the death of Amini remain unclear. Authorities have not released an official explanation for her death, and a number of activists have called for a full investigation into the circumstances.
Amini’s father was reportedly taken into custody on the anniversary of her death. He was last seen on Sunday morning, according to reports, and his whereabouts are currently unknown.
It is unclear why the Iranian authorities decided to detain Amini’s father on the anniversary of her death. The move could be linked to the anniversary, as the Iranian government is known to take harsh action against political activists. It is also possible that the move is related to the ongoing protests across Iran, which have seen an increase in arrests in recent weeks.
